THE PERFECT MOTHER’S DAY GIFT

Mother’s Day, the time of the year where we celebrate the most amazing women in our lives; our mothers, stepmoms, mother-in-law, grandma’s, aunties, female friends, or colleagues. It doesn’t necessarily have to be your mother alone; Mother’s Day is about appreciating and celebrating every woman in your life who’s a mother, and that involves buying gifts too.

Before you start talking about the different gifts you can buy, do you know how Mother’s Day started? We’re sure you don’t, neither do we... lol; but let’s see how this day came to be.

How did Mother's Day start?

Mother’s day is celebrated all over the world to honor and appreciate mothers and their sacrifices. Mother’s Day celebration can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans who held festivals to honor the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. Although, the modern holiday of Mother's Day can be traced to the United States in the 19th century, before the Civil War, when Ann Reeves Jarvis created “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” in order to educate local women on how to care for their children. After her death, her daughter; Anna Jarvis held a memorial in her name at St Andrew's Methodist Church in West Virginia. That same year, she campaigned to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday in the United States. Alongside Julia Ward Howe, a peace activist, and suffragette, they both pushed for the creation of Mother’s Day; dedicated to peace. Anna Jarvis was able to honor her campaign and successfully set aside a day to honor all mothers who she believed were "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world"; as Mother’s Day became an official holiday in 1914. Although, many of us are confused as to why we celebrate Mother’s Day twice a year; so we’ll tell you why.

Why are There 2 Mothers' Day?

In the United States and many other countries, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in the month of May. In some other countries like Britain, it is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent, known as Mothering Sunday; where pilgrims visit their home parishes and their mother church on Laetare Sunday, although it is largely replaced by Mother’s Day. To explain further, Mothering Sunday began in the 16th century and is celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent; when pilgrims travel to their Mother Church. Whereas, Mother's Day began in America by Anna Jarvis, to honor her own (biological) mother, and is now an official holiday to celebrate and honor mothers all over the world. Mothering Sunday is a religious festival, and it refers to Mother Church, not to your mother.

The end result is that although unrelated, Mothering Sunday is often referred to as Mother's Day. As such, there is no two Mother’s Day celebration. This finally brings us to the best gift ideas for Mother’s Day.

What is the Best Gift for Mother's Day?

Mother's Day, asides from her birthday, is the one occasion you get to show your mom or all the mothers in your life how much you love and appreciate them. But then, what can you gift to a woman who seems to have everything and doesn’t want her children to buy her anything? Or how can you appreciate a woman by getting her what she really wants? Would she want a garden tool or a new >kitchen utensil? Should you just get her flowers and a box of chocolates? What’s the most popular gift idea for mother’s on Mother’s Day to make them feel extra special? There are so many things to consider, but even if you’re shopping for a woman who seems to have everything, or you don’t know what she might want, you’d want to get her something that’ll last forever so she can always think of you when she sees it. So ditch the conventional chocolates and flowers, and spice things up a bit. If you’ve ever heard the saying “diamonds are a woman’s best friend”, now is the time to use it to your advantage. And what better diamonds than jewellery? Jewellery is everything! But you’d want to ensure it suits her style. What jewelleries can you get? Let’s help you decide.

Diamond Ring

There are different types of rings you can get for your mother (or wife) to show her how much you love her even if you’re on a budget. You can opt for a heart-shaped signet ring and inscribe “mom” or the initials "M" (for "mom") to transform this ring from plain to beautiful, and you can even make it a little sparkly by adding a small diamond to it. If she’s not a fan of flashy things, you can get her a minimalist ring that can be worn every day; just ensure it has small diamonds, either in 14-karat gold, rose gold, yellow, rose, or white gold to suit her style... because diamond is essential. If she’s someone who likes changing her hand jewellery, you can opt for a trendy chunky stacking ring set, which would be perfect for any outfit.

Necklace/Pendant

I don’t think necklaces can ever go out of style. And a what better, sweet, and simple way to show your mom you love her than with an interlocking gold loop necklace, which represents harmony? You can also opt for a cute adjustable compass pendant necklace as the perfect gift; as it signifies how mothers guide you in the right direction when you don’t know where you’re going. So cute!! For the strongest woman you know, why not get her an asymmetrical letter necklace in 14 karat gold? You can even customize it with whatever letter you want; probably the initials of her name or the first letter of her children’s name. That’s so cute and elegant! This way, your mom can carry her love for her kids wherever she goes.

Diamond Earrings

Earrings are another pair of jewellery that’ll never go out of style. Why not go bigger and better by getting your mom a lovely pair of gold hoops? I mean, everyone needs a pair of hoops earrings in their jewellery collection; and gold is bold and better. She'll certainly love this gift. If she doesn’t like fancy jewellery and has her own personal style, you can opt for a beautiful pair of open-circle studs or drop earrings...

don’t forget diamonds. She can pair them with any simple outfit; whether it’s a regular T-shirt and jeans or a casual dress, and go from simple to elegant!
